( Fabric artist Katrin Jurati)
Familiar and fond of natural fibers, I was drawn like a moth to artist’s
Katrin Jurati silk hand painted art scarves that have been selling in small shops
throughout the Los Angeles area. As a seasoned store owner the bright, colorful
pieces layered with messages of dreams and expressions enchanted me and
I wanted to learn more about her process.

( “Polytropos”, my favorite piece )
With over ten years experience dying silks pieces Jurati incorporates fabric pastel,
resist, wet on wet, and and spray in a variety of paint and dye processes to create
permanent works of art. Inside her studio, these lovely expressions of female
empowerment stand out and shine. First Jurati selects a natural fabric like
silk, cotton, bamboo and linen. Next the material goes through a series of washes,
getting ready for ink and paint. With an antique overhead projector, Jurati carefully
chooses fonts and text that speak to her through philosophical books and journals.

Finding images and text online feeds her inspiration process as well adding
emotive texture and layers in her work. Lastly, the fabric is placed in a vertical
steamer that has a double wall of stainless steel heating up the fabric up to two-
hundred and fifty degrees for almost six hours.
